The dome is made of sixteen elements like this:
The design of the curved sections is explained in the page of Chapel 7. In the following picture thirteen elements are already in place; the curved sections continue with triangular prisms which raise to the top of the dome:
The structure on the floor made of red rods is just a visual aid for better aligning the elements.
Perhaps the blue, eight-rod segments could be removed once the elements were in place, but I preferred to stay in the safe side. The upper hexagonal antiprism of each element is attached by one ball to the one to its left, as viewed from the inside of the dome. Three rods have to be removed from the antiprism to make the joint possible. This detail view shows two such joints:
